This sample contains a Project Server 2007 PSI Extension that retrieves geo data based on a custom field, and then the main feature is an AJAX Web Part that uses Virtual Earth to display the location of all the projects. The geo data is held in a local XML file - but could be extended to use a public web service. The document describing the sample is available both in the zip file with the code, and also as a separate download on the Downloads tab. The easiest way to work through this example may be to deploy the PSI extension and other necessary files (Geo Data MXL file, gif for display while loading) and then work through the dovument creating the web part project from scratch. This was first presented by Boris Scholl at TechEd 2008 and has been updated to Visual Studio 2008 and Virtual Earth 6.1 by Brian Smith.

PSI Extensions are custom web services that execute within the Project Server Interface infrastructure, sharing the same security context as other PSI web services. PSI Extensions can be very important in building line of business and integration solutions using Microsoft Office Project Server 2007. To enable developers to take advantage of PSI Extensions, I have created a generator that not only automates the creation of web services, but also automatically deploys the web service once generated. Intended for development environments, this generator takes the drudgery out of creating, configuring, and deploying PSI Extension web services.

During a Project Server 2003 to Project Server 2007 migration, projects have "_Published" appended at the end of their name. This tool will enable you to "bulk" rename all projects and removed the "_Published" string from all project names. This code sample contains the compiled executable and the C# code source.

Out of the box you cannot enforce control updates of specific lookup tables in Project Server 2007. This code sample leverages the standard Project Server interface API to limit who and what lookup table can be updated. This code sample was built for a Project Server session at TechEd 2008: Line-of-Business Integration Using Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 that Brian Smith and I will deliver.

Microsoft® Office Project 2007 (Microsoft Project) underscores Microsoft’s continued commitment to developers concerned with creating robust planning and scheduling tools for organizations with Microsoft Project deployments. The new Project Server Interface (PSI), a series of web services, exposes functionality and data which have been traditionally the purview of the Microsoft Project Windows® client and the Project Data Service. Most significantly, PSI brings a consistent and modern programming model to the world of Microsoft Project solution development. PSI makes developing solutions with Microsoft Project more feasible and affordable than at any time in the product’s history. While the PSI is a dramatic improvement over previous Microsoft Office Project Server (MOPS) extensibility strategies, the programming model is under-documented and requires a significant investment to learn and employ successfully. Furthermore, the authors have found that programming with the PSI involves repeating identical or similar operations over and over. Finally, PSI data and functionality are exposed and implemented across multiple web services and lacks a cohesive or coalescing layer from which all data and functionality can be accessed. Microsoft Project mpFx (mpFx) seeks to bridge the gap between the seasoned PSI developer and the developer new to the scene. By encapsulating PSI services and data into an object model, any developer new to PSI development can get started working with the PSI, step through mpFx’s encapsulation libraries, and learn how the system works. After using mPfx as a starter, the developer can start creating their own PSI libraries specific to their needs.

The Project Server 2007 Report Pack II - published in August 2009 - provides reports that can be run in your EPM environment and enable easier access to EPM information that organization can leverage to help effectively monitor usage of your EPM system. Documentation includes guidance on setting up and customizing the reports in the report pack. The report pack provides source files that will build on SQL Server Reporting Services 2005. The project may also be upgraded using SQL Server tools to build on SQL Server Reporting Services 2008. The Developers Reference included with the report pack includes technical information that will help developers make a few adjustments that are necessary for some of the reports to run successfully on SQL Server Reporting Services 2008. A highlight for EPM IT Professionals is the new Administration Dashboard which provides EPM system profile information in a concise two page report. It is intended to give EPM administrators an overall sense of the amount of data in the system. Hyperlinks in the report bring up additional system profile information. There are 25 sub-reports that associated with the Administration Dashboard report. Breaking out EPM system profile information into these smaller sub-reports helps to keep the Administration Dashboard manageable to review at a glance. Each of the 25 sub-reports focuses on EPM system profile information in a different area. The "original" Project Server Report Pack is part of the Project 2007 SDK (referenced below) and shows the basics using the Reporting DB in Project Server 2007 and answers the questions on "HOW" to build reports. This Project Server 2007 Report Pack II - "The Top Reports" addresses questions "WHAT" reports and "WHY". It has been built by top Microsoft Consultants who deploy and enhance the EPM solution for individual customers and thus contains very valuable know-how that they have collected over the years. Enjoy!
