Column DescriptionThis month Dr. James McCaffrey uses some statistical methods and a technique he calls PERIL to estimate risks to software projects including time, cost, and other potential resource shortfalls.
Risk analysis is a critically important activity for any software project. In the January 2009 issue of MSDN Magazine, I describe specific techniques you can use to identify and analyze the likelihood and impact of various project risks. In addition, I present a previously unpublished technique called PERIL (Project Exposure using Ranked Impact and Likelihood) which is useful in situations where you have a moderate amount of informational available.
