WIM2VHD creates large, un-compactable VHDs
Jul 26 2011 at 12:11 PM
I recently used WIM2VHD to create 2 Base VHDs, one of Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 and one of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1 (both 64-bit). I told the script to make a 50GB dynamic VHD for each. Post-creation, my Windows 7 VHD is 46.5GB and my Windows Server 2008 R2 image is 37.1GB.
When mounted, both VHD's contents total less that 10GB each, and I've used CCleaner afterwards to Wipe Free Space, and defraged and attempted to compact the VHD's, but there has been no change in the size since I created them. I'm just wondering is this some kind of bug, as each VHD should really only be about 6-7GB each.
Just for some further information, I compressed the VHD's with 7-Zip (7z LZMA2, otherwise default settings) to around 2GB each, so there's defiantly something screwy. Also, I'm running WIM2VHD on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit, I'm the sole user, and have UAC off (ran it in an elevated prompt just to be sure).
Any help in reducing the file size of these Base VHD's would be great, as I would like to save the space for differenciated disks

I found the problem. I have Diskeeper installed, it's automatic defrag feature was defragging the VHD's while IMAGEX is deploying to them, thereby moving files around and causing the VHD to grow. Afterr killing off Diskeeper, I've 2 x ~7GB VHD's!!
